Bloodmoon Goblins Goes Gold, Electronic Copies Released To Kickstarter Patrons

GOBLINS,

It is with the greatest pleasure that I report to you that Bloodmoon Goblins is complete.  I have emailed a PDF copy of the game to every patron e-mail address I have.  If you have not received it, please contact me here.

I hope you have as much fun playing Bloodmoon Goblins as I have.  I would wish that your campaign runs as long as the development cycle of the game, but by the end of that time period you would have a bunch of level 40 goblins who all have platemail made out of vorpal swords and use the desiccated hands of various dead lich-gods as back scratchers.  Thank you very much for your patience and faith in myself and this project.  It is an enormous and perhaps undeserved vote of confidence to back a Kickstarter for a guy who has no experience, education, or credentials relevant to producing any game product more complicated than his doodled graph paper dungeons.  I am humbled that you have that confidence in me and my idea, and I hope to earn that vote retroactively by delivering you a worthy product.

The story of Bloodmoon Goblins is just beginning.  It has mutated from a fun string of games for my group to a small book that will hopefully lead to entertainment for your group at some point.  My next tasks are to make it available for anyone to purchase and to commit it to printed form for those of you patrons who are due to receive it, and for anyone else who wants to buy it.  I’ll keep you updated on how that goes in the next couple of weeks.  But since the game is now committed in its finished form to the digital file, it is yours to enjoy, as promised.

Your next task, if you care to, is to run Bloodmoon Goblins for your group and tell me how it goes.  I hope your players relish the chance to play the devious scumbags who kill things and loot their stuff that we pretty much all started out as, playing RPGs.  Do keep me posted on how they do.

Thank you again for your support.  I hope it was worth the wait.

-John

Oh, and please do tell me if you (gasp) find an error or omission in the game.  I am eager to correct any mistakes that may have survived the last couple of weeks’ editorial carpet-bombing, and to send a corrected version of the game to all of you.

Progress and Release Announcement Video

Goblins!  It’s been an exciting 48 hours.

The biggest announcement is the completion and release of this:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tHYNq6Y6gW0

Follow me into the Zone of Truth for a revealing peek at Bloodmoon Goblins actual play.

Other things:

All backers who qualified for toast videos and Episode -1 should have received them.  If you have not, please tell me.  I’ve got replies from most of you but there are a couple I have not.  If I have a bad e-mail address for you, please message me here on Kickstarter.

Ruben and I – with a great deal of editorial help by Dan Repperger – have moved into something like Draft 2.5 of the game proper.  We have built the house, carpeted the floor, painted the walls, and installed the toilets.  Just kidding, there are no toilets, this is a goblin hole.  We still have to install lightbulbs and maybe move around the landscaping.  But we’re well into fine-tuning.

The game will be released in PDF to all Kickstarter backers on DECEMBER 1, 2012.  It will be brought to market and print versions as soon as possible on or after that date.

We in the US are now hunkering down for a long Thanksgiving holiday weekend.  More from me next week after the turkey coma has worn off!

The Final Countdown

I’d like to start by thanking each and every one of you for your support, both of the project and of me as someone new to game writing.  This has been an exciting opportunity, but it’s also been fraught with things I didn’t expect.  After graduating from law school, I was faced with the difficulties of navigating an unfamiliar job market.  I also admit to underestimating what it would take to produce a complete game project.

Let me say in no uncertain terms that I apologize for the disappointment and delays.  I have been so ashamed of not producing on the schedule I set out, and then not communicating with you, that I have…not communicated with you.  Productive, I know.  But the best thing I can do now is move forward and fix that.

First, a project update.  Ruben has produced a wonderful looking layout.  The content of the game is finalized and in PDF, but I need to review it and consult with Ruben and Keith about placing the art, cartography, and visual design that your gracious support has allowed me to invest in the project.

That process should resolve itself quickly, and by December 1st, all Kickstarter backers will have a PDF copy of Bloodmoon Goblins.  If I can’t find a good e-mail address for you through the Kickstarter interface, I’ll message you on here until it has somewhere to go.  I will not spend any time formatting the game for wider sale until you’ve all – at the very least – gotten electronic copies.  Distribution of printed copies may be integrated with an online retailer – I’m not there yet – but if I have to go farther down the path of broader publication before I can get you your rightfully purchased and long-awaited print copies, I will still fulfill your orders as soon as I can.

Second, I’ll be going over to Dan’s tomorrow.  I’ve already recorded all but one of the “thank you” toasts.  I’ll do the final one tomorrow, and those will then be emailed to each of the appropriate backers.  I have also produced another comedic video to announce the impending release of the game.  That will be here with another update in the next 24 hours.  There’s still a tiny bit of post-production to be done with it.

Finally, for anyone that pledged enough to receive a credit in the book, I’ll be in contact with you in the next 24 hours to find out exactly how you want your name listed in the credits.

Thank you again for your patience and support.  I apologize for the bumps we’ve hit along the way, but I’m committed to getting you the product with the quality you deserve as quickly as I can.  And please keep checking back on this site, as I’ll begin posting updates on my progress at the start of each week.

Noble knights and sagely wizards murdering goblins isn’t a heroic underdog story.  Goblins murdering them first…is.  As the holidays approach let us remember the true reason we play swashbuckling adventure fantasy RPGs:  to kill things and take their stuff.  And they call this a genre inversion.

More from me very soon.

Character Spotlight: Nexxa

Nexxa – Goblin Sorceress

Nexxa is a sorceress. Her ability to create and command supernatural flames manifested itself during her rapid goblin adolescence, causing her to be shunned and feared. She lurked in the temple for what protection it provided. The crafty old cleric Zerut saw her potential, declared that her powers were a gift from Xarboz, and took her in as his apprentice. Since then she has capitalized on her position and powers to become respected and feared.

She has serious anger management issues. She often reacts to the slighest inconvenience or delay with an outburst of rage that sometimes ends in flames coming out of her hands. She can usually constrain herself enough to try to get what she wants through charm rather than violence, but it’s safest not to stand near her the first time anything doesn’t go perfectly her way.

Nexxa is rather fetching to the goblin eye. This has made her insufferably vain and spurred her to collect jewels, rings, and soft fabrics to decorate herself with. Decked out in an outrageously mismatched but very numerous collection of accessories, she sits at the height of goblin fashion.

Cover Art and Text Copy Finished! On to Layout.

Goblins!

I present to you the cover art for our glorious enterprise.  Once again Keith Curtis has demonstrated his outstanding skill.

Bloodmoon Goblins Cover Art

Into the Depths, and with it the text copy of the game, is completed.  I ran it at Fear the Con V to great success.  The weakling inhabitants of the first level of the dungeon getting a little persnickity and attacking the perhaps-slightly-stronger inhabitants of the second level of the dungeon is outrageously fun.

The next and final phases of the project are layout, a presentably pretty version of the map of the trash-dwarfhold dungeon below, and setting up the channels of the game’s physical distribution.  You guys will have the PDF as soon as it “goes gold”, and those who ordered a physical version will have it as soon as I can have them printed and shipped.

I will be highlighting something from each chapter here as those chapters go into layout.  Look for one last character spotlight next week, then a room description of the warren, then a note on goblin society, then an encounter from Into the Depths, then a snippet from Attacking the Warrens.  After that…release!

I am very, very excited to get this into your hands.  Tabletop fantasy roleplaying was built for killing things and taking their stuff.  It was not build for paladins and bards and wizards…but for goblins.

Almost There

Goblins and goblinettes! The rise of the Bloodmoon is approaching. The map and description of the warrens are complete, the layout is formatted, and the goblins are ready to kill or be killed. Work remains primarily on the depths beneath the warrens and what to put on the cover.

It’s been a long road, and we’re not quite down to the wire, but we’re on the home stretch. Let’s go kill an elf.

Character Spotlight: Zagni

It’s time for another thrilling Bloodmoon Goblins character spotlight!

Introducing Zagni, an outcast lurking on the fringes of tribal space…

Zagni was designed by Geoff Stensrud, the goblins’ biggest patron.  I worried, at first, that I might have to deal with cheesy or boring characters if I opened up a custom goblin as part of the bigger rewards.  But I have been shown quite wrong.

Zagni stalks the woods near the warrens but never enters them or explains himself.  Younger goblins think he’s a frightening madman out lurking alone in the woods, or even that he doesn’t exist.  Older goblins with keen minds remember that there was once a goblin horribly mutilated by a wandering band of paleskins, blamed for their attack, and thrown out into exile to die…but could this be him?

It is indeed.  Zagni has been exiled, wrongly, but accepted it.  Fortunately, he was a scout and a tracker and a woodsman before he received his punishment, and so was able to survive in the wild even considering that he lost several moderate chunks of his body and one arm.  Now an even better sneaker and fighter, Zagni skulks through the cold forest, usually alone with only his thoughts.  He remains loyal to his goblin kin even as some of the older among them have betrayed him, and sometimes shadows watchers, hunters, and foragers to protect them.

He might appear suddenly to help a group of goblins in danger out in the wild from paleskins or bears.  It would take great degrees of luck and skill to find him, but he might, with enough convincing, do what he can to help bring about a regime change and win back admission to the tribe.

Ugnak and Grishlug

There are two obstacles standing between the Bloodmoon Goblins and any chance they have at succeeding their king.

Ugnak and Grishlug are orcs of the Headbiter tribe. Ugnak is an enormous, corpulent barbarian who feeds freely and frequently on anything the goblins have. Grishlug is a far smaller, leaner fighter who is nonetheless quite big enough to push a goblin around.

Officially, they are King Ghaz’s bodyguards. They flank him almost everywhere he goes, and have access to his inner sanctum. But their role in goblin society and their position at the center of interaction between the Headbiters and the Bloodmoons may be a bit more complicated…
